Warcraft

I have played little of the World of Warcraft video game, so my interest in the movie was mainly due to the involvement of Duncan Jones and I liked it very much.

It's hard to see fantasy movies and battle scenes these days without being reminded of Lord of the Rings which had set the benchmark, but Duncan has pulled it off and he did a great job with it.

Warcraft doesn't emulate its fantasy genre predecessors and stands on its own especially with its visual look and action.

Warcraft's world and imagery is beautiful without appearing as being saturated with CG. Anyone assuming otherwise is being misled by the trailers. Also the realism of orcs is stunning.

Good performance by the actors, with Travis Fimmel as Lothar, Paula Patton as Garona and especially Toby Kebbell as Durotan with his performance capture work.

The story and characters take some interesting turns, which definitely could have been improved further with a longer running time.

With just under 2 hours, the movie had me wanting to see more of the Warcraft world. I had the opposite reaction with the Hobbit movies. I surely enjoyed Warcraft more than the last Hobbit film. I hope they do a sequel to it.

Though I may not end up collecting anything Warcraft related, I am definitely tempted to look up Weta's Warcraft collectibles again.

Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War still felt like a Cap movie and not Avengers 2.5 despite the number of characters involved. Loved it.

The conflict and escalation throughout the movie felt quite organic, which is one among the many remarkable aspects of the movie.

The movie obviously doesn't have the scope of the comic storyline and I wasn't expecting that, but somehow it didn't give me the emotional nudge like some of the other MCU films. I think it will get better on a second viewing and I will be watching it again next week.

Russo Brothers' direction for grounded action is a visual treat. Black Panther was great and I am looking forward to his solo film.

Ant-Man and Spider-Man steal the show. Tom Holland is indeed the best Peter Parker and Spidey.

But one of my favourite scenes is where we get to see Steve Rogers display his raw physical strength. Goosebumps. And I need to listen to the score cue by Henry Jackman for that short scene again.

Oscars 2016

Couldn't watch Oscars 2016 live before, finally caught up to it now. Still have to catch up to many of the Oscar movies.

Glad to see that Brie Larson won. Leonardo DiCaprio finally got the Oscar and he gave a great speech.

I was most surprised with Ex Machina winning Best Visual Effects, thought Star Wars would get it. But in retrospective Ex Machina likely seemed more deserving, as it brought in more convincing flawless realism through visual effects.

Chris Rock was funny and insightful as always, he also addressed the controversies head on. But my most entertaining moment of Oscars 2016 was when Louis C.K. introduced the Documentary Short Subject category, he was so freaking hilarious.

And it was good to hear Back to the Future's Power of Love instrumental music playing just before the Costume Design category.

Though it didn't win Best Picture, I was very happy to see Mad Max: Fury Road winning many of the other creative and technical awards.

Deadpool

Deadpool is perhaps not a game changer but it lived up to the hype for me.

The awesome action during the first act including the great opening credits sets the bar really high, thus the third act (thanks to budget cut) feels a little short on action, though overall it's paced well. Also enjoyed the characters of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, especially how Colossus and the X-Men were depicted in the story line.

Despite its A rating here the was movie toned down a little with its depiction of gore and language. Damn Censor Board of India. Not sure how many scenes were affected, but the one scene in particular which got cut short was the triple head shot which was prominent in the red band trailer.

The humor really elevates the movie from being just another violent action movie. Wade and Vanessa with their messed up past are ideal for each other. And it's their love story which makes the stakes all the more personal in Deadpool rather than any other catastrophe.

Though there were some prominent songs in the movie, Deadpool himself didn't seem to have a distinct theme music or at least I didn't recognize it during the movie.

Deadpool is hilarious, entertaining, and a refreshing change in the genre of superhero movies. And Ryan Reynolds has plenty of charm to keep this franchise thriving for few more sequels. Bring on Cable!

My Top Favourite Movies of 2015

I saw 45 movies of 2015 and 13 of them were in the theater. My list of movies seen in 2015 is largely incomplete as I have yet to see The Hateful Eight, The Revenant, Bridge of Spies, Spotlight, Creed and several others which I missed out on.

Mad Max: Fury Road is my #1 favourite movie of 2015. The movie exceeded my expectations. The plot is simple and straightforward, but the characters are memorable while the action has set a new benchmark for modern day filmmaking along with its exceptional practical effects and stunts. Also I love the soundtrack by Tom Holkenborg (Junkie XL), especially the track Brothers In Arms (Bikers chase sequence at canyon). The music kinda makes me want to go and exercise. (And I don't really exercise anymore).

My top favourite movies of this year are as follows.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. Inside Out
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
4. Ant-Man
5. The Martian

Honorable Mention (release date order): Kingsman: The Secret Service, Ex Machina, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mistress America, Sicario, Victoria, The Peanuts Movie.

Here is another great mash-up video featuring scenes from 2015 movies by YouTube user Sleepy Skunk.

And here is a nice quote by Guillermo del Toro about favourite movies.
